Winston's
EXT. BARBER SHOP - DAY
KEVIN is walking his dog WINSTON down the street scrolling through his phone.
He looks up and sees his reflection in the mirror of a barber shop
CUT TO:
INT. TRAILER HOME - DAY - FIVE YEARS BEFORE
A commercial is playing for a restaurant called VINCE’S. They’re advertising their “delicious” Italian food. The TV is old and the picture is going in and out. Kevin turns off the TV as his stomach grumbles.
In the old smelly recliner his foster father snores and drool comes out of his mouth as his hand sits grabbing a cheese puff from a bag resting on his beer belly. Kevin rolls his eyes and grabs his dark green trench coat and slams the door.
CUT TO:
EXT. CITY - DAY
Kevin walks aimlessly throughout the city kicking trash as he passes by. His stomach grumbles as he realizes he hasn’t eaten since Friday at school.
He walks past some basketball courts and sees his classmates playing a game. He keeps his head down so they don’t recognize him and ask him to join in.
He looks up and realizes he is suddenly in front of the restaurant from the commercial. He opens his wallet and is surprised to see a dollar.
He hesitates, but goes in anyway. He tries to look somewhat presentable, dusting crumbs off the shirt he pulled from the dirty clothes...again.
CUT TO:
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY - 5 YEARS BEFORE
Kevin is seated at a table eating. His face is close to his plate and his eyes wander around the room, scanning for a sign that someone is watching him.
THE WAITER walks by and places the check on the edge of the table.
Kevin’S hair scrapes the plate getting sauce in his hair and he wipes his arm across his mouth in an effort to clean himself up.
He realizes no one is watching him and slowly stands up to leave knowing he can’t pay for the meal.
He walks toward the back of the restaurant and pushes through the kitchen door.
CUT TO:
INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - FIVE YEARS BEFORE
He walks quickly through the hustle and bustle of the busy kitchen weaving in and out of cooks and bus boys.
He can hear The Waiter asking staff if they’ve seen him, and Kevin picks up his pace, pushing through what he believes to be the door to the alleyway.
INT. THE ROOM - DAY - FIVE YEARS BEFORE
Kevin bursts into a dimly lit room with a round table in the center. Surrounding the table are six men huddled over stacks of cash speaking low and intensely.
THE MEN look at him and stand straight up.
Kevin scans the room quickly looking for a body guard and another way to escape.
He takes a small step toward the door that leads to the outside. He can hear the sirens and hopes that the police will be more interested in arresting these men than a starving kid who tried to dine and dash.
The Men begin whispering amongst themselves and turn back to Kevin. To his surprise, they want him to join whatever it is they have going on.
Kevin doesn’t know what to say, “he’s just a kid.” He shakes his head and he starts to sweat. He just wants to finish school and get out of this town, he doesn’t want to get into any trouble. He can hear the bustling in the kitchen and knows the cops will bust through that door any moment.
The Men start to scramble and hide what they’re working on, and Kevin takes this moment to slip out the door.
CUT TO:
EXT. ALLEYWAY - DUSK - FIVE YEARS BEFORE
He takes off running as fast as he can. He runs through the city and circles back toward the way he came, no one has been on his tail for a while. He sees the light of the barber shop on and he dips inside.
INT. BARBER SHOP - NIGHT - FIVE YEARS BEFORE
All eyes turn to him as he pants out of breath at the door.
BARBER
Have a seat son.
Kevin shakes his head, letting him know he can’t afford a trim.
THE BARBER gives him a soft smile and motions him into the seat anyway, signaling this one is on the house.
Kevin walks slowly toward his chair. He watches as his hair falls to the ground, and looks away. This is the first time he’s had a proper haircut since, well, ever.
Men play poker at the card table in the corner and a young boy is sweeping the hair across the shop. Kevin envies the atmosphere here, it’s homey and lively and what he would imagine a family would look like.
The Barber signals for him to look in the mirror.
Kevin is surprised and a smile spreads across his face. He doesn’t even recognize himself.
He thanks The Barber and to his surprise gives him a hug.
He takes off his trench coat and stuffs it in the garbage. He steps outside as his stomach grumbles again.
CUT TO:
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER
Kevin reaches into the bushes at the back of the school and pulls out a wallet.
He walks over to a ledge and hops up, climbing through an open window. He ends up in the locker room of the high school.
CUT TO:
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - CONTINUOUS
Kevin feels his way around the locker room. He’s used to coming here late at night when his foster dad is raging drunk and won’t leave him alone.
He finds a locker he thinks will have something good and puts his ear up to the lock, listening for the clicks. He gets it unlocked and opens the locker.
He finds a bag and rips it open looking for something clean and warm. Grateful his classmates are better off than he is, he gathers some clothes and hits the showers.
CUT TO:
INT. VINCE’S RESTAURANT - LATER
Kevin walks in and The Waiter from before is still frantic over the dine and dash that occurred earlier. He asks for a table for one and is seated. Thankfully, the other waiter is so busy and frantic that he is greeted by a different waitress. He takes a look at the menu and orders.
Kevin appears to be an entirely different person, eating more refined and clean. He finishes his meal and the waitress brings his check. He smiles and thanks her. He leaves a one hundred dollar bill on the table, gets up, pushes in his chair, and leaves.
CUT TO: PRESENT
EXT. BARBER SHOP - PRESENT
Winston barks and Kevin shakes his head as he comes back to reality. He looks in the barber shop window and his eyes focus on the reflection. Where the VINCE’S sign once was, now shines WINSTON’S RESTAURANT.
He steps off the curb and walks across the street to the restaurant.
INT. WINSTON’S RESTAURANT - DAY
Kevin walks in with Winston by his side. THE HOSTESS walks around the podium and greets Kevin. She sees Winston and bends down to pet him and takes the leash from Kevin.
Kevin walks past her and greets THE WAITRESS who served him on that night many years ago. He sits down at a table and The Waiter who he once dined and dashed on comes to take his order.
Kevin always feels bad when The Waiter is working, knowing what he did all those years ago. He tries to be extra pleasant to him when he’s working.
As he eats his meal he starts going through his emails waiting for his accountant to meet him. All around him the staff prepare for the lunch opening, making sure everything is perfect, just as Kevin likes.
CARLOS walks in and waves to Kevin. He stops to pet Winston on his way to the table.
CARLOS
I still don’t know why you want to buy
that damn barber shop across the way for
that old man anyway.
Kevin shakes his head and smiles.
CUT TO:
INT. THE ROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK (REPEAT FOOTAGE)
Kevin bursts into a dimly lit room with a round table in the center. Surrounding the table are six men huddled over stacks of cash speaking low and intensely.
The men look at him and stand straight up.
Kevin scans the room quickly looking for a body guard and another way to escape.

INT. THE ROOM - NIGHT
The Men are struggling to get everything put away. There’s more money in this room than Kevin has ever seen in his entire life.
Kevin sees a wad of cash fall on the floor, no one sees it but him. He’s so close.
In the scrambling of the men Kevin grabs the stack of cash and runs out the door. He stuffs the cash in his wallet and takes off.
Kevin runs past his high school and he ditches his wallet so they can’t identify him, and hopes that no one finds it.
He keeps running until he comes up on a barber shop.
CUT TO:
INT. BARBER SHOP - NIGHT (REPEAT FOOTAGE)

He reaches for his wallet and realizes he ditched his wallet at the school.
He thanks The Barber and to his surprise gives him a hug.
He takes off his trench coat and stuffs it in the garbage. He steps outside as his stomach grumbles again.
The Barber will never understand what this haircut has meant to him.
Kevin promises to himself to pay The Barber back, once he makes it big.

Kevin finalizes the paperwork, walks over to the window, flipping the “Closed” sign to “Open”.

KEVIN turns around to walk to the back. He pulls a quarter out of his pocket and pushes open the door...

DEADSET
INT. SHOOTING RANGE - DAY
A young boy is firing at a silhouette, he is concentrating hard but doesn’t seem to be angry nor happy. He empties the gun then takes off his ear muffs.
An older boy comes up to him and pats him on the back, congratulating him for hitting the target every time. He never misses, and always hits the same spot.
DUDE 1
That’s why we call you DEADSET
DEADSET smiles and walks past the rest of his family to put back the gun and get his stuff so he can leave. He goes outside to wait for his mom while the rest of his family smokes outside, they always try to get him to take a drag but he knows that he’s too young for that stuff.
MOM pulls up and barely stops long enough for him to jump in the car before pulling off again. She’s complaining that his older brother is nothin’ like the rest of them and that she’s glad that DEADSET is following in the family business at least. He wishes he wasn’t.
EXT. HOME - DAY
MOM drags his sister inside and DEADSET says he will be inside after a walk to the corner store. He heads that direction but instead dips in to a hidden alleyway where he sits and does his homework. He rushes to get through it, knowing his mom would never approve of him being “one of them scholars” like his older brother SHEPPARD. He packs up his backpack and rushes home before dark.
INT. HOME - NIGHT
DEADSET can smell the smoke as soon as he opens the door. His dad must be home. He wasn’t due back for another week, and now DEADSET has no idea what to do. He tries to run upstairs before his dad spots him but as soon as he gets halfway up, he hears his name being called. He tosses his backpack to the top of the stairs, and heads downstairs to see his dad.
DAD tells him he will be home for the rest of the week, and he spoke with the family and it’s time. DEADSET can’t put it off any longer and there’s no way his brother can rescue him this time. He nods to his dad and walks slowly up to his room.
INT. ROOM - NIGHT
DEADSET finishes his homework under the glow of his nightlight. He is the top student in his class and has gotten Honor Roll since grade school. He hides the awards under his mattress where his dad expects him to hide his weed. He hates that stuff, but he wants more than anything to please his dad. He sets out his clothes for the next day and says a prayer that his brother comes home soon.
EXT. HOME - DAY
DEADSET is standing outside the house kicking a bottle back and forth. He’s hoping the family forgot about him. Just as he turns to go back inside he hears the bass of a car blasting some Hip-Hop coming from down the street. His stomach churns as he turns around with a smile on his face.
DUDE 2
Ayyy DEADSET, less go man! You gon’ be one of us nah.
CUT TO:
INT. BUSTA’S - DAY
BUSTA stands over DEADSET with his big beer belly resting over his jeans. He is explaining the initiation process and DEADSET nods slowly, signaling that he understands. BUSTA doesn’t like boys that don’t respond. All around him his other family members hoot and holler as BUSTA finishes the details of the assassination. DEADSET doesn’t understand what this white dude ever did to hurt them, but BUSTA and THE FAMILY believe that everyone that’s white has hurt them. DEADSET knows better, SHEPPARD taught him that. DEADSET will be the youngest member of THE FAMILY, if he passes initiation. Everyone slaps him on the back, telling him how easy this gon’ be for him, his name’s DEADSET after all. Someone hands him a gun, one they’ve had for who knows how long, and got from who knows where. He puts it in his waistband just like he was taught. The weight of the gun feels as heavy as what he’s about to do.
CUT TO:
He’s trying to act normal as he sits in the back seat of the car. His mom would be so proud of what he’s about to do. THE FAMILY raps along with the song on the radio and DEADSET nods his head along with them he can feel the car start to slow down as they pull off the freeway. Someone turns down the radio and someone puts their hand on his shoulder and shakes him telling him he gots this. They pull up to a stop sign at the end of the off ramp and the area surrounding him is empty. Dirt fields, a ditch, and some mountains, nothing special, but not exactly hidden. He wonders why they chose this place.
DUDE 1
You got this, man. We finna see you later.
EXT. THE PLACE - DAY
DEADSET gets out of the car. He fist bumps everyone in the car… he knows he has this.
The car peels off as he walks a little bit down the road and
hops into the ditch. There’s tumbleweeds everywhere and mud
and muck, why did this have to be the place? His brand new shoes are going to be so damn dirty after this. When he completes this task, he’ll have enough money to buy 5 of these.
He hears footsteps on the gravel above him, then the WHITE DUDE hops into the ditch.
He’s a smoker, DEADSET can tell by the way he smells. He doesn’t smoke the good stuff like the Family does.
WHITE DUDE
They sent a damn kid to deliver?
DEADSET narrows his eyes. Screw this guy. He don’t know who the hell he’s messing with.
DEADSET
Screw you, asshole. You don’t know who you’re messing with.
He’s been preparing for this basically since he was born. He knows what he’s supposed to do.
He reaches into his waist band. The WHITE DUDE clearly thinks
he is getting his product, but DEADSET pulls out the gun.
WHITE DUDE backs up with his hands up, and DEADSET gets a twinge of anxiety. No one has ever been scared of him before.
He holds the gun up and pretends he’s at the range. It’s all math and physics really, that’s why he’s so good. His hand doesn’t even shake as he envisions he’s at the shooting range.
WHITE DUDE is pleading with him, saying he didn’t do nothing, he doesn’t deserve this, and it’s making DEADSET’S head spin.
He can’t think with all this noise, he closes his eyes and shoots.
CUT TO BLACK.
Does DEADSET hit his target?

EXT. THE PLACE - DAY
He missed. How could he miss? He’s never missed. He hit him in the chest though. He’s dead right? He’s just laying there. His chest isn’t moving and there’s so much blood. DEADSET climbs out of the ditch and takes off toward home, grateful they always make the prospects find their own way home. He pulls out his phone and calls the only person he could think of in a time like this.
DEADSET
SHEPPARD?
CUT TO BLACK.
EXT. THE PLACE - DAY
The WHITE DUDE starts to move. He wakes up with a sudden gasp for air and spits out blood. He has no idea what just happened. His body is hurting everywhere as he struggles to roll over. He spits out more blood and cries out in agony.
He starts to crawl slowly and in pain. His face is in the tumbleweeds and the mud and the muck. He’s dragging his leg along like it was somehow broken when he fell. He manages to crawl up out of the ditch and ends up on a dirt plateau. There’s nothing all around him. He starts crawling slowly toward what he thinks is the road. He’s in agony and is still bleeding. He hears car tires and the car going into park. He braces himself for the shot that will finish him off. Nothing comes. He starts crawling toward the car assuming it’s friend rather than foe. They aren’t helping him, but they aren’t harming him. He gets closer to the car and reaches out, he crawls to the passenger side door and grabs the door frame.
CUT TO BLACK.
EXT. CORNER STORE - DAY
DEADSET is waiting on the corner bouncing up and down, waiting for SHEPPARD to get there. He sees his car coming down the road and gets in apologizing a thousand times. SHEPPARD is understanding which makes it even harder. He gives him the same lecture every time about how he shouldn’t get involved in the family business. SHEPPARD apologizes, he knows it’s not his fault. They drive toward The Place, SHEPPARD is going to help DEADSET clean all of this up.
CUT TO:
They get off the same exit, pass the stop sign, and bring the car to a crawl as they pass the ditch and roll toward one of the hills on the dirt field. SHEPPARD puts the car in park and DEADSET hops out of the car, not even bothering to close the door. He runs toward the ditch to see the body and hopes its still there, he completely misses the WHITE DUDE crawling toward the car. SHEPPARD sees the man and has to decide whether to kill him or let him in the car and help him. The WHITE DUDE is getting closer to the car and in the rearview SHEPPARD can see DEADSET freaking out that the body isn’t there. He hears a thud and the WHITE DUDE has just grabbed hold of the door frame. SHEPPARD has to make a plan, DEADSET is running toward the car, he can’t tell him he doesn’t know what to do.
SHEPPARD
Here’s what we gotta do.
Does Sheppard decide to:
[[Keep White Dude alive?->Keep White Dude Alive 2]]

Troop Thirteen
INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT
NATE is walking around the gas station with his arms full of
snacks.
He grabs a pack of cookies just before he hits the registers.
He asks for $20 on pump “13” and pays for everything. He gets a quarter back in change and the cashier slides it over to him, tails side up. Seriously who does that?
As he’s about to walk out he sees a kid with a table. A Tiny
Troop named LJ. Before the kid can say anything...
NATE
I’m good!
He walks to his car and throws his snacks in the front seat.
He starts pumping gas and looks over to see if at least
someone bought some cookies from the kid.
EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT
LJ is staring straight at him. He looks about 10 years old.
Lanky and slender with slightly unkempt hair, like his troop
leader didn’t bother to help him get ready.
He won’t stop staring at NATE, but there are tons of people
walking by. It’s like they don’t even see him.
NATE stares back at him, refusing to break his gaze first,
he’ll show this kid who’s boss.
NATE takes note of the 13 patch on the kid’s vest, in case he
needs to report him.
LJ’s head turns ever so slightly and NATE follows his gaze.
There’s a girl in a van at the pump across from him. She’s
also a Tiny Troop. She looks about 12 and has her head down
like she’s sad or tired. She also has unkempt hair and looks
like her troop lead left her to fend for herself.
As the shadows shift he notices a “13” patch on her vest as
well.
As soon as he makes the connection, her head snaps up and she
makes eye contact with him.
CLICK. The gas pump is finished.
NATE turns around to finish and when he turns back the van is
gone, with no noise at all.
He looks to the other kid and he’s gone too. Table and all.
CUT TO:
INT. CAR - NIGHT
NATE is driving home bopping along to his music. No one is
ever on this road at this time of night.
He reaches down to grab the cookies from the gas station. As
he grabs the cookies his eyes are off the road for a brief
second.
When he turns back to the road his headlights are shining on
a kid. Another troop about 7 years old.
NATE swerves to avoid hitting him and notices at the last
second the “13” patch he’s seen all night.
EXT. DARK ROAD - NIGHT
He pulls over on the side of the road and gets out to see if
the kid is ok.
It starts to rain.
He pulls out his phone and turns on the flashlight but the
kid is nowhere to be seen. There’s no sign of life anywhere
on the road.
He gets back in his car and takes off.
CUT TO:
EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT
NATE pulls up to his house and sits in the car.
Nate’s confused by what just happened. He clearly saw a kid
in the road and he clearly saw a “13”, but midterms have been
tough and he hasn’t been sleeping.
He starts to unlock the front door when he hears tires on
pavement, he turns around and sees the same van as before.
He’s never seen a van like this in his neighborhood, it has
to be the one from the gas station.
There’s a troop in the front seat, and she locks eyes with
him as the van drives by.
Shaken, NATE hurries inside and makes sure the door is
locked.
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
He flips the light switch on as he turns around and sees the
troop from the middle of the road.
The power goes out.
The power comes back on seconds later, and the kid is gone. Where he was standing there's a shiny quarter on the ground, George Washington side up.
NATE looks around and shakes his head. He’s just seeing
things now. There is no way this is happening. He heads to
his room to get some sleep.
FADE TO BLACK.
INT. NATE’S ROOM - DAY
NATE wakes up feeling hungover. He starts to get up, walks
over and opens the door to his room.
Wait... he never closes the door to his room... he suddenly
has a flashback to seeing the trooper in his house.
He peeks his head out into the hallway and looks around.
There’s a weird light in the house. Like everything has a
weird grey tone. NATE figures he’s just not fully awake yet.
He walks toward the bathroom and his roommate walks past him,
not saying a word. It’s like she doesn’t even know he’s
there.
NATE
‘Morning to you too...grumps-a-lot
Nothing.
She doesn’t even turn around.
He walks into the bathroom and shuts the door to take a
shower.
NATE walks out and sees his roommate again, this time she is
sitting on the couch. He tries to ask her if she noticed the
power going out.
Nothing.
She doesn’t look up from her phone. He waves his hand in
front of her face and she doesn’t even flinch.
NATE (CONT'D)
Asshole...

KID
Would you like to buy some cookies sir?
He looks at the passengers seat and the quarter is sitting there, eagle side up.
Does Nate buy cookies from the troop?
[[Yes-> Buys Cookies]]
[[No-> Doesn't Buy Cookies]]Nate buys some damn cookies from the troop. He's not going through this again.
[[The End]]
Nate decides not to buy cookies. He's already bought way to much, and screw these kids that are terrorizing him. This isn't real anyway... is it?
[[Yes->Troop Thirteen]]
[[No->The End]] DEADSET never misses. Even with his eyes closed. There's no way this fool wasn't gonna get popped.
DEADSET notices something shiny fell out of WHITE DUDE's pocket.
He walks over and picks up a shiny quarter, George Washington side up.
[[Next Episode->Troop Thirteen]] EXT.
[[Keep White Dude alive?]]
[[Finish White Dude off]]
